7 THINGS I'VE LEARNED DRAWING OUTSIDE

It's been more than a year since I started my Let's Draw Outside challenge, where I go out (to a museum, park, exhibition, coffee shop or any place outside) and I draw the entire afternoon, film a video and share my experience (and the final illustrations) here in my blog with you guys.

And after a while doing this, I realized how much I've learned with this experience! Not only in terms of which museums I liked the most, but also little details that make this experience way more fun, comfortable and enjoyable. Here all the tips and tricks I've learned so far:

1. Wear comfy shoes  Maybe my most important rule is the most obvious one, but you need to be comfortable. You'll walk a lot, stand in one spot for a while, or even sit or draw in all positions (like on a bench or on the floor) so first of all: go with your favourite comfy boots or sneakers/trainers. The same goes with clothing!

2. Before you start, EAT!  Oh my nerds, you have no idea how many times I started drawing with an empty stomach and an hour later I want to die. I can't work or function without food in my belly. That's why I usually eat breakfast or lunch first, and then I'll go to a museum, best idea ever!

2. Antes de comenzar, COME!

3. Take only the stuff you're going to use  There's nothing worst than walking for hours and carrying dead weight. Of course when we're planning our adventure and we're super motivated about going out and draw, we tend to over pack our backpack with lots of tools and art supplies; watercolors and 50 markers, and what about those colour pencils I wanted to try for so long… In the end we might not even use those supplies at all. Trust me: take with you only the tools you usually use. Is it a pencil, eraser and sketchbook? That's all you need.

4. Go alone or with a friend, but take your time  I LOVE taking my time at museums, and there's nothing more awesome to find someone who understands that. You see, I have a weird rhythm: Sometimes I can be hours at one painting, and 3 minutes looking at another painting. I hate feeling like I'm slowing down people or, on the contrary, I hate being pushed or feel the pressure to leave or move on to another painting/room. That's why I love going alone, or going with people who gets this. Please tell me I'm not alone in this one.

5. Take pictures  (if it's allowed) Museums, parks, exhibitions and coffee shops are the perfect opportunity to practice clothing, human figure, posture, different type of trees and an endless amount of free resources for our drawing practices. Size the moment and take pictures of trees, sculptures, the name of that lovely painting you saw or the awesome outfit that guy was wearing in the Cafe. Keep a folder on your computer with these visual resources and your future self will appreciate it.

6. If you're going alone, take an audio companion with you!  It might be your favourite podcast, an audio book, nice music or even the museum audio tour, but I encourage you to listen something while drawing. Why? Because when we listen to something while drawing, we tend to feel less self conscious about our drawings and people staring at them. I get this question a lot ("hey Fran, how do you do to not feel embarrassed when you're drawing on the bus and people are staring at your sketchbook?") and the answer is very simple: I don't care because I'm not paying attention to them. I'm paying attention at what I'm drawing and what I'm listening to. And that's it, I can't pay attention at more than 2 things at the time.

7. If you're drawing at the park, don't forget a blanket  Sitting in wet grass is not fun at all, please bring a picnic blanket with you. Your friends (and your butt) will be eternally grateful.

I think that's it guys. I keep thinking of more tips I could give you but I think that's all the best (and most useful) advices I can think of. PLEASE let me know your best advice for drawing outside! Stay warm and keep drawing, have an awesome week my beloved nerds :)

  1. While I lived in Spain we went to a lot of museums with my husband. I would always encourage him to bring his sketchbook and a few art supplies so he could sketch with me in the museum. I totally could have used the audio companion tip because not listening to anything and trying to concentrate on what's in front of you is so difficult >.< I tended to admire what we saw in the museum and then go into a cafe with my husband and talk and sketch about what we saw! It was like a drawing date each time <3 We don't do that as much anymore because we'd have to go into New York City to do it but maybe we'll try again this year when it gets warmer. It was really nice being able to bond with him while we drew.

  2. Fran!

  9. I hate drawing outside because I get so self conscious, to the point in which I completely avoid it. Last time I did it several people approached me :/ I wish I had the confidence to do what you do and ignore people

Me parecen super románticos y apasionados.

  14. One tip I'm always aware of (especially this time of year) is to be sure I dress warm enough. Sitting still for a time, it's easy for me to get chilly, so I like to wear plenty of layers. ^^
Some great tips, Fran! Keep up the lovely work. ^^

  18. Thank you Fran, this post is amazing! I, myself, live in London and adore museums, but never got the courage to get my sketchbook out, ouch. Like you, I carefully choose who I go to museums with as having the right people with you is key to really enjoy the day out. It happened before that I had to rush through the museum's halls just because the friend I was with was not interested and got bored after 15 minutes. A nightmare! I now plan to go out and draw next week, your post has given me the little push I needed to get it done. Feel free to join me :)

    saludos Frannerd!

  20. I would add be careful with bring backpacks to museums. I went to the Seattle Art Museum with a small backpack and they asked me to check it in the baggage check. It was small and had everything I needed (I couldn't take out what I needed and leave the rest). They said I could carry it in only if I held the bag on my fore arm or in my hand. I could not wear it on my back. I think they are afraid that backpacks will knock over art work. Which is also weird since this is earthquake country, and most items are bolted down. You may be better off using a messenger bag or a regular over the shoulder bag/purse.

Also, I dislike being rushed too. I like to take my time when I am viewing an art piece. When someone else comes up, I get self conscious, then start wondering if I am in their way and wonder what they are thinking. I dislike the people that walk in front of you when you are looking at art, or stand right in the center so no one else can see it or take pictures, so I try not to do the same thing, especially if the place is crowded.

  21. Fran, you're not alone, in the "taking your time in museums"; here i'm !; it's not cool to be rushed, or feeling that you're slowing down people; my mom, somehow taught me to appreciate the artworks; i haven't found someone who is similar to me (that's not part of my family); the tip of listening music, it's really nice (: I love your work frann, it's inspiring, keep going ! -nat-.
